The Alumni Campus Chapter is a group of hard working volunteers who operate a second hand bookshop to raise money to support current students. The alumni chapter was first established in 1990, making it the oldest of UOW’s global alumni chapters.
The Alumni Bookshop has been in operation for more than two decades and is open to the wider community to donate and purchase pre-loved books across all genres. With your help, we will support more students to achieve their educational dreams.
Many students need financial help to allow them to continue their studies while covering living and educational expenses. Students who are the first in their family to attend university face an additional challenges when starting university and completing their studies.
Meantime, there are alumni, retired academics and others within the University community who have pre-loved books that they no longer need but do not want to send to landfill.
The Campus Chapter recognised the challenges faced by many students. The Chapter created two equity scholarships and prizes for excellence. These are funded entirely by sales from the bookshop for current student which are awarded annually. Often the recipients of these scholarships are students who are the first in their family to study at a tertiary level.
So far, in excess of $285,000 has been raised and placed in perpetuity to ensure that scholarships and prizes continue, regardless of the bookshop’s operation.
Each year, more than 42 students benefit from much-needed financial assistance through scholarships and prizes of excellence awarded across all faculties and schools, but also from the encouragement and emotional support this group provides and which is so important in helping students achieve their potential.
Those who volunteer also benefit from their work with the Campus Chapter, strengthening their connection to the University and taking pride in the knowledge that their work helps students.
